Plan before starting a children’s portrait session

The proverb, ‘He who fails to plan, plans to fail’ is very true for children’s portrait session. Before putting a photo session together it is best to plan the entire photo shoot in advance. Planning well in advance can work wonders for a children’s portrait session. Think of everything and put them in writing. Do not take anything easy. Delegate the work and get regular feed backs. Inform the parents what to do. Ask them to keep their children ready for the photo shoot on the D day. Proper coaching needs to be given not only to the children but also to the parents. Teach the child to smile on command. This is going to take some time but with practice it is easy to achieve. These are all something that needs to be planned well before the photo shoot.

This means that a children’s photographer needs to meet up with the subject and their family much before the day the photo shoot is scheduled. This helps them to take command of the situation on the particular day. Planning ensures that precious time is not wasted and the resources are used properly. Lot of things need to be put together before the photo shoot and these have to be chalked out. Following simple strategies will ensure success and help complete the job without any effort. The child should be in an alert mood for the photo shoot and all the necessary action needs to be taken to keep the child in great mood.

While planning, it is always advised to keep the parents within the periphery. Their recommendations should be valued as they know their child better. The children’s photographer needs to keep in mind that the plan must be flexible enough to accommodate last minute changes. Some shots are spontaneous and here the planning needs to be relaxed. When it comes to children’s portraits session planning is not followed to the core as most of the time children are unpredictable and act differently. This does not mean that you should not plan and let the child dominate the show. Specific areas like poses, location, props, dress can be controlled by the photographer and these aspects can be planned.

The first and foremost item on your agenda should be to plan the feeding and resting of the child. Both the parents and the child photographer need to ensure that these two aspects are taken care of. Be totally prepared and ready to handle off-hand situations. For the photo shoot to go smoothly see to that the child is kept in good spirits.
