Happy Babies and Happier Photographers

Healthy babies with crinkly smiles, the stuff that one finds on the celluloid screen and seen on the walls of quite a few houses all thanks to baby photographers. Being a baby photographer is not for everyone though it sounds easy. A baby photographer has to grapple with challenges including overanxious parents, nervous grandparents and relatives, and of course moody babies.

A baby photographer will tell you taking photos of babies is not for the impatient. Getting a fidgety baby to stay still even in the presence of their parents or having baby props in place is quite a task. Parents at times are averse to having their babies photographed due to harsh lights and the glare of a camera. Tricky though the task is, a little preparation should help one get some great portraits. Though one could hire a professional photographer, even a novice can make an excellent baby photographer provided certain things are taken care of. Background, location, clothes and posture are just a few aspects a baby photographer needs to keep in mind.

Decide on the backdrop. Usually a wall would be preferable but place a table cloth or sheet against the wall and leave some space. A baby photographer at times prefers showing the dad/mom/relative holding the baby in their arms but caution about taking adequate precautions. Have something soft plopped on the floor or bed where you plan to shoot the photos. Have the baby wearing solid colors and not light colors as this gives the baby a rosier look. Try not to have too many props in the photo because it would take the focus away from the baby. That said, certain baby-related items can always be used - a stuffed teddy bear, a blanket, a pacifier or anything else that is personal.

A baby photographer always ensures that all the required items are ready and so is the background. Most people prefer mother and baby shots, while some prefer posing only the baby wrapped in a blanket, or cuddled on a bed or snuggled into a sofa. Close up shots of the baby’s head, tiny arms and legs are some popular options. Having pets pose with a baby is not a very good idea though it makes for an excellent portrait. It is always better to wait till the baby has grown up and the pet has got used to the idea of a newborn now taking its parents’ attention.
