Newborn portraits – A thing of beauty

The newness and freshness of a baby need to be captured within the first two weeks of their arrival on earth. Later than that the baby starts growing and the features tend to change. The photo album of your child is not complete without a newborn photograph of them. In fact every family photo album should start with newborn photos. This period is very precious and do not allow it to slip from your mind. Plan in advance for a newborn portrait session, possibly during the final stages of pregnancy, so that the newness of the baby is caught on camera for you to relish all your life.

Though during the first year of your baby many snaps will be taken they will not be as new as they are on the hospital bed. Parents also play a role in the newborn portrait session. Sometimes the hands of the father or mother are used to hold the baby. Therefore ensure that you take extra care for your hands before exposing them to the flashlights. A little bit of makeup will do a lot to a newborn portrait. Most newborn portraits are taken when the baby is asleep. Since they do not focus much it is best to take sleeping pictures of the newborn. This does not mean that all pictures need to be in sleeping positions. The baby while awake can also form great portraits.

Use the right type of clothing while picturing a newborn. Most of the time they are left without any clothes with only a towel wrapped around. Sometime they are fully clothed with sweaters, monkey caps and even socks. This again depends on the taste of the parents and the newborn photographer. Do not use clumsy outfit or over-sized dresses as they dominate the photo. The baby needs to be kept in warm surrounding to avoid them crying. Sufficient diapers and baby wipes need to be kept ready to handle emergency situations. Instructions on parents dressing style also needs to be given in advance for a trouble free photo shoot.

A newborn photographer should keep in mind that not all babies are fond of lights. There may be a few who have an aversion for lights and your flash lights can be of immense disturbance during such occasions. For those, try shooting without flash lights. Sometimes flashlights make the baby appear pale. Therefore, as much as possible try to avoid flashlights. Suppose lights are necessary then use soft lights that do not cause any annoyance to the baby. Using lamp shades also can control the intensity of the light.
