Dictionaries define tetherball as “a game with two players who use rackets to strike a ball that is tethered to the top of a pole; the object is to wrap the string around the pole”. You might have seen an interesting ball game played by the lead role in the movie Napoleon Dynamite, which is nothing but tetherball. As the rules of this sport are straight forward and easy to follow it is being played in parks and school play grounds. Also requirement for this sport is very less and are easily acquirable. First, lets take a look at what do you require for this sport, a pole of ten feet height, an eight feet nylon rope with clips, and of course a soft Voit tetherball, earlier tetherballs had either an external rubber or metal loop for the clip but balls of today have a recessed area for the purpose.
One end of the rope has to be attached to the pole via the clip and its other end to the ball. Legal playing area of tether ball is designated at the halfway point of the pole, which is drawn using a painted or a tape line. Goal of the game is to wrap the entire rope onto the pole without the final wrap crossing the centre line, wrap can be in any direction; clockwise or anti-clockwise. Whoever manages to reach this point first is declared as a winner.
In an actual game, two players stand opposite to each other, having the pole in between them, and they are not suppose to cross the imagined median line. Of these two one is designated as the server who have to use an open hand or fist to serve the ball to the opponent's play area. Now, the opponent tries to block the ball so that the rope doesn't get wrapped around the pole. The player also try to send it back and so the ropes gets wrapped, but catching of the ball is not allowed likewise throwing the ball with an open hand or touching the rope. In one version of tetherball bouncing of ball is allowed until shooting it but if the ball doesn't in motion the opponent gets chance to serve. When the game reaches its end it becomes more exciting as the length of the rope decreases.
